Chilli beef, pepper and onions
Beef stripes fried in chilli, pepper and onions in a light tasty sauce is so quick to make which makes it ideal for any midweek dinner.
What goes well alongside this dish?
This dish goes really well alongside plain basmati rice, egg fried rice or egg noodles.
Chilli beef, peppers and onions
Ingredients
- thin steak, cut into stripes
- ¾ tsp chinese 5 spice
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ onion, sliced
- ½ red pepper, deseeded and sliced
- ½ green pepper, deseeded and sliced
- 1-2 red chillies, finely sliced
- 1 tsp garlic paste
- 3 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 2 tbsp water
- 1½ tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp white sugar
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- ½-1 tsp chilli powder
Garnish
- 3 spring onions, finely sliced
Instructions
- In a bowl, add the beef stripes and mix in the Chinese 5 spice and set aside.
- Prepare the sauce, in a small bowl add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, water, sugar, ginger and chilli powder and set aside.
- Heat the oil in a pan, add the beef strips and fry for around 5mins until browned all over. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
- Add the onions, peppers, chilli and garlic to the pan and fry until the vegetables begin to soften, but not too soft as you will want a bit of a crunch.
- Return the beef to the pan, stir in the sauce and cook for a few mins.
- Serve alongside some plain or egg fried rice, or even some noodles with some spring onions sprinkled on top and some shop bought prawn crackers on the side.
