Ingredients

  • 350 g thin-cut steak, sliced thinly
  • 3 tbsp cornflour
  • 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • 85 g broccoli, sliced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced
  • 1 red chilli, thinly sliced (remove the seeds if you don't want it too hot)
  • 4 spring onions, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 2 tbsp mirin or white wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup

Instructions

  • Put the steak strips in a bowl, add the cornflour and Chinese five spice powder.  Mix until all covered and set aside.
  • Mix the mirin, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce and tomato ketchup in a jug with 3 tbsp water and set aside.
  • In a pan of salted water add the broccoli slices and cook for 5mins.  Remove, drain and run under cold water to stop cooking and set aside.
  • Heat a frying pan until hot, add the oil and beef and fry until golden and crispy.  Remove the beef from the pan and drain on kitchen paper.
  • In the same pan, add the red pepper, chilli, spring onions, garlic cloves and ginger and stir fry for 3-5mins until the peppers soften, but don't let the garlic and ginger burn otherwise it may taste bitter.  Pour the sauce over the vegetables and stir for a couple of mins.
  • Return the beef and broccoli to the frying pan and combine.
  • If you prefer a bit more sauce, add a bit more water.
  • Serve immediately with prawn crackers, noodles or rice.
