Crispy chilli beef
Ingredients
- 350 g thin-cut steak, sliced thinly
- 3 tbsp cornflour
- 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
- 85 g broccoli, sliced
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced
- 1 red chilli, thinly sliced (remove the seeds if you don't want it too hot)
- 4 spring onions, sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- 2 tbsp mirin or white wine vinegar
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
Instructions
- Put the steak strips in a bowl, add the cornflour and Chinese five spice powder. Mix until all covered and set aside.
- Mix the mirin, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce and tomato ketchup in a jug with 3 tbsp water and set aside.
- In a pan of salted water add the broccoli slices and cook for 5mins. Remove, drain and run under cold water to stop cooking and set aside.
- Heat a frying pan until hot, add the oil and beef and fry until golden and crispy. Remove the beef from the pan and drain on kitchen paper.
- In the same pan, add the red pepper, chilli, spring onions, garlic cloves and ginger and stir fry for 3-5mins until the peppers soften, but don't let the garlic and ginger burn otherwise it may taste bitter. Pour the sauce over the vegetables and stir for a couple of mins.
- Return the beef and broccoli to the frying pan and combine.
- If you prefer a bit more sauce, add a bit more water.
- Serve immediately with prawn crackers, noodles or rice.
